Getting started with APK installs

Sometimes an app is not on Google Play, or you need an older version that still works better on your phone. That is when an APK comes in. An APK is basically the app file you can install by hand, like downloading a program on a computer.

This can feel a bit scary at first, because Android will warn you and ask for extra permission. That warning is not there to annoy you. It is there because APK files can also be used to trick people. So we go slow, check what we download, and only then install it.
